Concept of Ethnobotany

Ethnobotany is a scientific field that examines the relationships between people and plants, focusing on how plants are used, managed, and perceived across different human societies and cultures.

Brief History

The term ethnobotany was coined by John William Harshberger in 1895 to describe the study of plants used by primitive and aboriginal people. Historically, human beings relied entirely on trial and error to identify plants for food, shelter, clothing, and healing. Over generations, these observations were compiled into localized traditional knowledge systems, forming the foundation of modern pharmacognosy and botany.

Importance

Ethnobotany plays a critical role in various scientific and socio-economic domains. Its primary significances include:

Drug Discovery: Many modern pharmaceutical drugs are derived from traditional plant remedies, such as aspirin, quinine, and reserpine.
Conservation of Biodiversity: Understanding indigenous plant management helps protect endangered species and natural habitats.
Cultural Preservation: Documenting traditional plant lore safeguards the indigenous knowledge of tribal communities from extinction.
Sustainable Agriculture: Traditional practices offer insights into eco-friendly farming and wild harvesting methods.

Materials and Methods of Ethnobotanical Investigation

Ethnobotanical research requires a multidisciplinary approach combining botany, anthropology, linguistics, and pharmacology. Field investigations generally follow a structured methodology:

Preparation and Literature Review: Researchers review existing historical, botanical, and anthropological records of the target region before entering the field.
Fieldwork and Interviews: Investigators conduct interviews and questionnaires with local informants, traditional healers, medicine men, and village elders to gather data on plant uses.
Voucher Specimen Collection: Plant specimens utilized by the community are collected in triplicate along with flowers, fruits, and leaves for accurate taxonomic identification. Herbarium sheets are prepared.
Taxonomic Identification: Specimens are identified using regional floras, botanical keys, and comparison with deposited herbarium specimens.
Data Analysis: Quantitative and qualitative methods are applied to analyze the collected ethnobotanical data, including use-value indices and consensus analysis.

Study of Plants Used by Dominant Ethnic Tribes in N.E. India

Northeast India is a mega-biodiversity hotspot inhabited by numerous indigenous ethnic tribes, including the Khasi, Jaintia, Garo, Naga, Mizo, and Adi peoples. These communities possess profound traditional knowledge regarding wild flora for healthcare and livelihood.

Key Observation: The rich cultural diversity of N.E. India corresponds directly with its high botanical endemism, resulting in unique indigenous pharmacopoeias that rely heavily on forest resources for primary healthcare.

Study of Specific Medicinal Plants

The following medicinal plants are widely utilized in traditional systems of medicine and by ethnic communities in India.

1. Sarpagandha

Definition: Rauvolfia serpentina (Apocynaceae), commonly known as Sarpagandha, is a perennial shrub famous for its winding roots and powerful medicinal properties.

Active Constituents: Contains major alkaloids such as reserpine, ajmalicine, and serpentine.
Traditional Uses: The root extract is traditionally used to treat high blood pressure, snakebites, insect stings, insomnia, and psychiatric disorders.
Practical Example: Root powders are brewed into decoctions to calm the nervous system and lower blood pressure.

2. Basak

Definition: Justicia adhatoda (Acanthaceae), known commonly as Basak or Vasaka, is a small, evergreen, dense shrub with lance-shaped leaves.

Active Constituents: Contains the quinazoline alkaloid vasicine along with essential oils.
Traditional Uses: Widely used in Ayurveda and folk medicine for respiratory ailments like bronchitis, asthma, cough, and excessive mucus production.
Practical Example: Fresh leaf juice mixed with honey is consumed to relieve chest congestion and coughs.

3. Tulsi

Definition: Ocimum sanctum (Lamiaceae), also known as Holy Basil, is an aromatic perennial herb revered in Indian culture and traditional medicine.

Active Constituents: Contains eugenol, rosmarinic acid, and ursolic acid.
Traditional Uses: Used as an adaptogen to reduce stress, boost immunity, and treat colds, fevers, digestive disorders, and skin infections.
Practical Example: Fresh leaves are boiled in water to prepare herbal tea for treating common viral fevers and sore throats.

4. Turmeric

Definition: Curcuma longa (Zingiberaceae) is a perennial herbaceous plant whose underground rhizomes are extensively used as a spice and medicine.

Active Constituents: Contains curcuminoids, most notably curcumin, alongside volatile oils.
Traditional Uses: Valued for its potent anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, wound-healing, and antioxidant properties. Used for liver complaints, sprains, and dermatological conditions.
Practical Example: Turmeric powder mixed with warm milk or applied directly as a paste on wounds to prevent infection.

5. Ginger

Definition: Zingiber officinale (Zingiberaceae) is a reed-like plant with annual leafy stems and subterranean rhizomes used globally in traditional remedies.

Active Constituents: Contains gingerols, shogaols, and essential oils.
Traditional Uses: Excellent carminative and digestive aid. Used to relieve nausea, motion sickness, indigestion, and cold symptoms.
Practical Example: Fresh rhizome slices chewed or brewed into tea to alleviate morning sickness or digestive bloating.

6. Ashoka

Definition: Saraca asoca (Fabaceae) is a small, evergreen tree with fragrant orange-yellow flowers, highly significant in Ayurvedic pharmacopeia.

Active Constituents: Contains tannins, glycosides, flavonoids, and sterols.
Traditional Uses: The bark is the primary medicinal part used predominantly for gynecological disorders, including menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, and uterine bleeding.
Practical Example: Bark decoctions are prepared and administered to women to regulate menstrual cycles and relieve uterine pain.

7. Arjun spp.

Definition: Terminalia arjuna (Combretaceae) is a large, deciduous tree with smooth grey bark, well known for its cardiotoxic and cardioprotective evaluations.

Active Constituents: Contains triterpenoids (arjunolic acid), flavonoids, tannins, and minerals like calcium and magnesium.
Traditional Uses: The bark is the premier herbal remedy for cardiovascular health, used to strengthen heart muscles, manage angina, lower cholesterol, and regulate blood pressure.
Practical Example: Arjun bark powder is boiled in milk or water and consumed daily as a heart tonic.
