Concept of Work and Energy
Work
In physics, work is done whenever a force acts upon a body and the body undergoes a displacement in the direction of the force.
W = F × d
Where W is work, F is force, and d is displacement. The SI unit of work is the Joule (J) or Newton-meter (N·m).
Energy
Energy is defined as the capacity or ability to do work. Like work, it is a scalar quantity and its SI unit is the Joule (J).
Power
Power is defined as the rate at which work is done or the rate at which energy is transferred or converted over time.
P = W / t
Where P is power, W is work, and t is time. The SI unit of power is the Watt (W), where 1 Watt = 1 Joule per second.

Classification of Energy Sources

Primary and Secondary Energy
- Primary Energy Sources: These are energy sources found in nature that have not been subjected to any conversion or transformation process. Examples include coal, crude oil, natural gas, solar energy, wind energy, and uranium.
- Secondary Energy Sources: These are derived from primary energy sources through chemical, physical, or thermal conversion processes. They are also known as energy carriers. Examples include electricity, gasoline, and hydrogen fuel.
Commercial and Non-Commercial Energy
- Commercial Energy Sources: These are energy sources that are available in the market for a definite price. Consumers purchase them for various uses. Examples include coal, petroleum, natural gas, and electricity.
- Non-Commercial Energy Sources: These are energy sources that are freely available in nature and are generally not bought and sold in the commercial market. Examples include firewood, dried dung cakes, and agricultural waste, which are commonly used in rural areas.
Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy
- Renewable Energy Sources: These are energy sources that can be replenished naturally over a short period of time and are virtually inexhaustible. Examples include solar energy, wind energy, hydroelectric power, geothermal energy, and biomass.
- Non-Renewable Energy Sources: These are energy sources that exist in limited amounts and take millions of years to form. Once depleted, they cannot be replaced in a short timeframe. Examples include fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium).
Importance of Renewable Energy Resources
Renewable energy resources play a critical role in modern sustainable development. Their importance includes:
- Inexhaustible Supply: Unlike fossil fuels, renewable sources like the sun and wind will not run out.
- Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Utilizing renewable energy significantly lowers carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions, helping to combat global warming.
- Energy Security: Relying on domestic renewable sources reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels and stabilizes energy supply chains.

- World Energy Scenario: Fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) continue to dominate the global energy mix, fulfilling the majority of primary energy consumption. However, there is a rapid global transition toward adopting renewable energy technologies to meet climate targets.
- Indian Energy Scenario: India is one of the fastest-growing energy consumers in the world. Coal remains the primary source for electricity generation in India, followed by a rapidly expanding renewable sector, particularly solar and wind power.

Need of Eco-Friendly and Green Energy
Traditional energy sources, particularly fossil fuels, cause severe environmental degradation.
