Unit 5: Absolute Idealism

The Reality as a Unified Whole.

Table of Contents

1. G.W.F. Hegel: The Rational is Real

Hegel rejected Kant's idea of a "Thing-in-itself" (Noumenon) that we can never know. For Hegel, there is no hidden reality. Reality is Mind or Reason unfolding through history.

"The real is rational, and the rational is real."

This means that the laws of our thought are the same as the laws of the universe. Everything that exists can be understood by reason because everything is a part of the "Absolute."

2. The Dialectical Method

Hegel argued that truth is not static; it is a process. Thought moves through conflict and contradiction to reach a higher truth. This is known as the triad of:

  • Thesis: A starting idea or state (e.g., Being).
  • Antithesis: The opposite or contradiction that arises from the thesis (e.g., Nothing).
  • Synthesis: The higher state that resolves the conflict, keeping what is true from both (e.g., Becoming).

This process continues until it reaches the Absolute Idea, where all contradictions are finally resolved.

3. The Absolute Spirit (Geist)

For Hegel, the ultimate reality is the Absolute Spirit. History is simply the story of the Spirit becoming aware of itself through human culture, art, religion, and philosophy. When humanity reaches full rational self-understanding, the Spirit is "at home" with itself.

4. F.H. Bradley: Appearance and Reality

F.H. Bradley was the most prominent of the British Idealists. In his masterpiece Appearance and Reality, he made a distinction between things as they seem and the ultimate truth.

5. The Critique of Relations

Bradley is famous for his argument that Relations are impossible. He argued that if 'A' is related to 'B' by relation 'R', then we need another relation to connect 'A' to 'R', and another to connect 'R' to 'B'. This leads to an infinite regress.

Conclusion: Since our everyday world is based on relations (A causes B, A is next to B), the everyday world is mere Appearance. Only the unified "Absolute" which has no internal relations is Reality.
